How to find a Great Chemistry, Biology and Physics Tutor

What should parents and students look for in a good Chemistry tutor? What makes a good biology tutor? How about a good physics tutor?

Keys to good private science tutoring

There are keys to good tutoring, and science tutoring is no different. The tutor must be knowledgeable, personable, and have that drive to want others to understand. The tutor must also be skilled in coming up with different ways of explaining concepts, making up examples on the fly, and talking about a concept on different levels of understanding, meeting the level of the student sitting with her.

The "personable academic"--the ultimate tutor

This profile is met by the personable academic--probably that student in your college dorm who tutored you through every lab class. They are caring people with a gift for academics and a lively personality. They love the science world, and they keep an amazing amount of information in their brain, near the surface. They are usually 2-10 years out of college (the first time--many are back in school for advanced degrees), and many of them are getting ready to go back to school or are already there. The key is that they love science and the learning process. These are the tutors we hunt for on a daily basis.

The biology/physics split

We find that good private science tutors tend to come in two forms. Some tend towards biology, and can also tutor chemistry (the life science people). Others tend towards physics, and can also tutor chemistry--these also tend to be the ones that can tutor upper level math as well (the physical science people. Some very rare tutoring geniuses can tutor any math or science class a high school has to offer, and more.

Great chemistry, biology and physics tutors are worth it

These tutors are highly skilled people, and they cost more to work with. But the results are fabulous. They immediately set students at ease, talk to them in a language they can understand, and get their students on the road to success immediately. They desire that their students "get it" and remember it and use it on tests. These qualities are critical to the success of private tutoring. We covet our great science tutors and we are always on the lookout for more of them.

Higher quality tutors, better results

These outstanding tutors are not always easy to find, but they are out there if you know where to look. We have made it our mission to find them and link them up with students who need tutoring. Sure, our company could work with high school and college tutors and get by OK (and pay them a lot less) but we find that these "personable academics" have a far better track record of bringing in fast success. They are also more dependable and tend to stick around longer to develop deeper relationships with their students and parents. For these reasons, we believe the money is well spent on the higher quality tutor.
